Captaining in IPL has made me more involved in the game now: Ruturaj Gaikwad

India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has said that after captaining his IPL franchise CSK, he has now become more involved in the game. Notably, Gaikwad was appointed as CSK skipper ahead of Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) after legendary skipper MS Dhoni stepped down from his role.

The 27-year-old had a good beginning to his captaincy stint as Chennai started the tournament winning four out of the first six matches. However, the team failed to keep their momentum going and narrowly missed out from sealing a place in the playoffs losing their last game against RCB.

Despite failing to take his team into the playoffs on his captaincy debut, Gaikwad has learnt a lot as he now looks to bat with responsibility and finishing the game on his own. The Pune-born batter further feels that he’s now more involved in the game than before.

“Actually nothing much has changed, the batting has been the same. It’s all about playing with responsibility and finishing it by my own so nothing has changed. It’s just that the way you look at the game every time. You’re more involved now in the game since you’ve captained an IPL franchise for a long period of time. So, you tend to be in the game for a longer period of time instead of just staying in the boundary outside and just focussing on one ball. As I said, it has not made much difference,” said Gaikwad in a video released by the BCCI.

Gaikwad’s magnificent 77 in second T20I

Gaikwad scored a splendid 77* (47) in the second T20I against Zimbabwe with the help of 11 fours and a six. He got involved in crucial stands with Abhishek Sharma (100 off 47) for the second wicket of 137 off 76 balls. The right-handed batter also put on an unbeaten 87-run stand off 36 balls with Rinku Singh (48* off 22) for the third wicket helping India reach a massive score of 234/2 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Zimbabwe were bundled out for just 134 handing India a massive win by 100 runs which helped them level the series 1-1. The two teams will next lock horns in the third T20I on Wednesday, July 10 at the same venue.
